Superfood Smoothie

Smoothies are an excellent way to blend and maximize your flavor and nutritional content in a simple beverage. You can enjoy this Superfood Smoothie as a quick breakfast on the go or a refreshing post-workout treat. I have recently started a Paleo challenge that requires me to eliminate basically all added sugar (even honey….the struggle is real y’all). I have been looking for delicious ways to enjoy clean real food options (Real Food: I mean food that is in its natural state, not processed).

ATTENTION PARENTS! Smoothies are a fantastic way to get your kids to enjoy their vegetables. You can blend dark leafy greens such as kale, collards and spinach (these greens are loaded with iron, vitamin c, calcium and so many more nutrients that may be lacking from your kid’s diets). The natural sweetness of the fruit will cut down the bitterness of the greens and make delicious and healthy option for your whole family to enjoy.

What is this Superfood hype about? There have been many television programs (Dr. Oz, The Doctor’s, and multiple network morning shows) that have all referenced “superfoods” and their benefits. That super powerful marketing word simply represents a category of foods that contain high nutritional content and promote overall well being.

Did you remember to eat your berries? I used a frozen berry mix for this recipe, but my absolute favorite from the mix is blueberries. Blueberries are considered a popular superfood. Much of the power behind blueberries actually comes from their color; the deeper the hue of blue, the greater amount of flavonoids within the berry. The flavonoids serve as a protective compound in the brain’s memory carrying cells, neurons, protecting from the damaging effects of oxidation and inflammation- helping to preserve memory function.

Enjoy!
